We have 52 FHU sites with 9 extra long pull-through sites and 6 sites that back up to the pond for extra closeness to cast a fishing line. The fish love to be fed in the mornings and evenings. Our pond is stocked with Catfish, Bass, and Bream. Enjoy the new water fountain and lights at night, it is so relaxing.

If you've visited Shack before, perhaps with H2O Captain, what's next on the agenda? Passengers frequently inquire of Captain Mark, "Where do the horses find water to drink?" To their surprise, I elucidate the various places where fresh water can be sourced. One might assume that Whale Creek is the answer, but here's the twist – there is no Whale Creek! Nonetheless, the spot, particularly during low tide, is right on the beach where an aquifer surfaces. It operates incessantly, but its purity is evident at low tide, confirmed by a handheld refractometer.

Upon anchoring the H2O Captain boat in the sheltered waters along Shackleford Banks, a 20-minute walk leads us to Whale Creek and its clandestine puddle. Here, we may witness up to two herds competing for a specific freshwater "pool." Captain Mark has observed two stallions engaging in a fierce struggle for their herd's priority in drinking. It can be quite intense. However, when only one herd is present, a more orderly rotation unfolds within the social hierarchy.

Cape Lookout, the southern tip of the Outer Banks, is a natural barrier island on the Atlantic coast of North Carolina, located east of the Southern Outer Banks on The Crystal Coast. There are no wild horses at Cape Lookout.

Authorized in 1804, the light station at Cape Lookout sits on four acres of land purchased from Joseph Fulford and Elijah Piggot. The original lighthouse, built in 1812, stood at 96 feet but proved too short for mariners navigating the hazardous Diamond Shoals. The current lighthouse, a 163-foot red brick tower, was constructed to replace the initial structure and was first lit on November 1, 1859. It features a spiral iron staircase and a first-order Fresnel lens, which projects a fixed light visible up to 18 miles in good weather. Although automated in 1950 and now using LEDs visible for 12 miles, the lighthouse retains its unique daymark with black diamonds oriented north-south and white diamonds east-west.

On May 20, 1861, North Carolina joined the Confederacy, and lenses from coastal lighthouses were removed to hinder Union navigation. Despite an attempt by Confederate troops in 1864 to destroy the Cape Lookout Lighthouse, it survived with some damage. The original Fresnel lenses, found in Raleigh in 1865, were restored post-war. In recent years, safety concerns have led to the lighthouse being closed to the public for climbing, with the earliest reopening projected for 2027. However, the Cape Lookout Lighthouse Keepers Quarters Museum remains open, offering free entry.  A short walk on the boardwalk will bring you to toilet facilities, along with the National Park Service Gift Shop.

North Carolina boasts seven coastal lighthouses, spanning from the Outer Banks to the Brunswick Islands: Currituck, Bodie Island, Hatteras, Ocracoke, Cape Lookout, Oak Island, and Bald Head Island. Unlike the others, Cape Lookout is inaccessible by car. H2O Captain Eco-Tour Private Boat Excursions, an authorized National Park Service permittee, is the recognized and reliable boat charter service to visit this iconic lighthouse.

This excursion is the epitome of what The Crystal Coast, The Outer Banks, and The Southern Outer Banks have to offer at The Cape Lookout National Seashore in North Carolina.  Whether we travel through the North Atlantic Ocean to get to our destinations or in the protected waters of Back Sound our goal is to find the wild horses of Shackleford Banks for you amongst the dunes with the Cape Lookout Lighthouse as our backdrop, as well as to walk along the Boardwalk to touch the Cape Lookout Lighthouse, walk through the Lightkeepers quarters which has been turned into a small museum and breathe the wonderful salt air from its porch while sitting on its rocking chairs, as well as visiting the National Park Service's Gift Shop a short walk from the Lighthouse.  Please note: The Lighthouse is closed again for climbing in 2025.

The iconic landmark is a 163-foot-high lighthouse located on the most southern point in The Outer Banks. It flashes every 15 seconds and is visible at least 12 miles out to sea. It is one of the very few lighthouses that operate during the day. It became fully automated in 1950.

On our return, we will go through the quaint town of Beaufort, the seaside fishing village of Morehead City, and the Rachel Carson Reserve.

Start times are dependent on the tide level at Sand Dollar Island.

Depending on the time of day and the level of the tide, we will cross the Beaufort Inlet, a natural passageway to the North Atlantic Ocean to cash in on Sand Dollars which you will find in the shallow water and/or beach as you walk on your own to find these gems on this vanishing island. This island is underwater at high tide!

We will then get back into the H2O Captain boat and anchor just a few yards from the beach off Shackleford Banks in a place that the ferries cannot get into! We are here to walk on two different trails (30 minute walk total) as well as the beach on the ocean to view their natural habitat, wild horses as well as to discover some shelling. Official H2O Captain Shell Bags will be given to each party!

Back on the boat, we will head to the 3rd island at The Cape Lookout Lighthouse all along protected waters. You will be able to get right up to the Lighthouse as well as tour the Lightkeeper's home, now a small museum. We go back onto the boat for the last time to view the islands that comprise the Rachel Carson Preserve, as well as the Beaufort and Morehead City waterfronts. What a day! Depending on how long you wish to spend on each island, this tour can take up to 6 hours.

We start our trip in the quiet waters of Pelletier Creek at Coral Bay Marina, then head over to the Canals of PKS.  In the 1960’s building a canal system as part of a real estate development was a common practice up and down the east coast. From a governmental regulatory perspective, constructing a canal system in the late 1960s and even the marinas at Beacon’s Reach and Sea Isle in the 1980s was significantly easier than it is today. What with environmental sensitivity, wetland designations, wildlife and endangered species concerns, plant and habitat issues, water table and wastewater disposal and groundwater contamination considerations, the requirement for Environmental Impact Statements, and other county, state, and federal regulations it would be a hard slog to develop a community today with similar amenities to what we have.

In addition to providing many recreational benefits, the canal system lowers the water table, which improves the operation of everyone’s septic system, helps drain the land, enhances the dispersal of stormwater, and eliminates the need for roadside drainage ditches. All of which contribute to keeping the mosquito population at a tolerable level. The ownership and responsibility for maintaining the waterway is spread among several groups. The contents of the canal are federal/state waters, the bottom of the canal was deeded to Pine Knoll Association by the Roosevelt family, and the bulkheads are the responsibility of adjacent landowners as specified by town ordinance. Maintaining navigable depth is the responsibility of PKA.

Afterward, we set a course to Spooners Creek on the other side of Bogue Sound.  It will be an interesting contrast to what we have already seen, before heading back on the ICW and Pelletier Creek.  From $549 for up to 4 passengers. Please add $30 for passengers #5 and #6.

We begin our journey from the tranquil waters of Coral Bay Marina in Morehead City. Once we leave the harbor, we immediately set course on the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) heading south. Captain Mark will share the rich history of this route along the way. Our first stop is Spooners Creek, known for its luxurious homes and boats. Next, we’ll visit Gull Harbor and its charming marina—Captain Mark has a special connection to this spot; be sure to ask him about it. 

Continuing south, we'll dock in downtown Swansboro or at a private dock of one of its fine dining establishments. Let Captain Mark know your restaurant preference, or he can handle the reservations for you. Please note that lunch is not included in the cost of your private excursion. 

If time allows, Captain Mark will walk you to Giovani’s Brooklyn Bagels (the best bagels around), a special treat in Swansboro. If you prefer, you can also explore this delightful seaside village on foot!

Embark on a voyage through time as we transport ourselves back a couple of centuries to explore The Old Cemetery on Shackleford Banks, the only one of the two on this pristine island. In homage to those who came before us, we'll pay our respects to the departed before embarking on a scenic hike through the maritime forest, leading us to a tranquil clearing on High Hill. If the day permits, our adventure will continue as we descend to the plateau just beyond the dunes, shielding us from the North Atlantic Ocean. Here, we hope to catch sight of the wild horses indulging in the nourishing green grasses. Time and energy permitting, a stroll over the dunes will grant us a breathtaking view of the Sea. Our path will be mindful, following the trails carved out by the island's wild horses, residents for 400-500 years.

While the hike may pose challenges in terms of length, weather conditions, and insect activity, the reward lies in the sheer beauty and seclusion of this Custom Excursion—an exploration rarely ventured by others who visit the island.

The beach or the boat provides alternative spots for those less inclined to hike. Captain Mark can arrange a dining table on the boat, allowing guests to bask in the sun, enjoy the vibrant waters, and possibly catch a glimpse of dolphins or the wild horses passing by.

Join us for the ultimate trifecta of excursions with the Boat, Walk, Beach experience, a favorite among our customers. Venture to the remote, undeveloped and uninhabited Shackleford Banks, home to the famous wild horses, and enjoy exceptional shelling opportunities. This tour promises an Instagram-worthy day and is our most popular adventure!

Our journey begins on the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW), passing through the NC State Port of Morehead City, USCG Station Ft. Macon, and Beaufort Inlet navigating over 4-miles along the protected waters of Shackleford Banks to our primary destination.

Led by Captain Mark, the guided land tour will take you along one or more trails to the ocean side of the island. Explore a maritime forest, grasslands, and dunes, while keeping an eye out for the renowned wild Shackelford Banker Horses. Reach a pristine, untouched beach and enjoy the solitude while we identify shells like the Lettered Olive, Northern Quahog Clams, helmets, and the elusive Scotch Bonnets. The beauty of the dunes and waves becomes our companion along this secluded shoreline, far from the ferry routes.

As we transition back through the dunes, a stunning scene of the sound with its picturesque colors unfolds. A refreshing dip in Shackleford's protected waters offers a perfect respite for families on a warm day.

Returning to the boat, Captain Mark will navigate through the north end of Middle Marsh and 2 other islands in The Rachel Carson Estuarine Reserve (RCR), looking for more wild horses along Taylors Creek, across from the the quaint town of Beaufort’s historic Front Street.

Our final stop includes a visit to the fishing village of Morehead City's waterfront, adorned with restaurants and bars, before concluding our 4-hour excursion. Prices start at $549, with free parking for your vehicles at our marina in Morehead City.
